During my two years at BYG I have developed UI skills which have helped bring our courses to life. Using minimal text to draw attention to important information and interactive elements to stop the learner fatigue, I have learnt simple but effective techniques which can be developed for many different clients and brands.

How can we talk about our feelings? This animation explores the ways we can begin to open up about our feelings to those around us. Rhiannon and the instructional designer worked together closely on the script and designs to ensure it felt natural and communicated the skills every day people can use to help influence their conversations.

This animation was created as a reflective piece to help people consider their own work-life balance. The idea was designed to reflect life, using a bike metaphor symbolising the chaotic busy roads, the uphill battle and the calm straight paths. This style was created to be whimsical and beautiful to allow the user to reflect and calm their emotions.

-
Easy to use UX/UI
-
Compelling character
-
Appealing & accessible to
-
target audience
First thoughts
Deliverables
-
Quality of idea, push boundaries
-
Design thinking & ideation
-

Lack of development skills in unity
Why use AI & AR:
-
Needs to explore physical world
-
Tackle a problem or need
-
Uses body language & expression
Dev requirements
-
Fit for mobile
-
Android deployment
-
App, QR code??

The embodied AI would work well with this as emotions & realism can help users feel heard. However lack of physical realm, makes this a bit redundant.
The winner!
Initial idea of pantry items is
strong, however character whilst
cooking feels disjointed. Use of AR
isn’t strong enough

Audience
Mario, a digital nomad and active software engineer travels the world whilst working remotely. He wants to learn English to boost his job prospects and ease his travels. However, his ADHD makes it hard to focus for long periods.
Traditional language apps bore him with trivial phrases; he prefers practical, real-world knowledge, like how to order a coffee naturally.

Development
Why use AR?
01
In 2008, Cory Kidd's study found that people were more committed to their fitness goals with an interactive robot compared to using pen and paper or a touch screen. The robot's social interactions kept participants engaged and motivated, with most completing the study and even bonding with the robot.
02
As users will practice pronunciation with their mentor it is important that the AI can interact and respond with visual cue’s as to how they’ve performed.
03
It's crucial that the robot's appearance doesn't reflect specific cultural or societal standards, this could make it harder for people from diverse backgrounds to connect with. It could lead to the exclusion of users from various cultures, those with disabilities, or minority groups.
Mentors characteristics
01
The mentors voice will be female, with a friendly tone. The goal here is for her to sound like a friend, rather than a GPS assistant.

03
She is excitable and positive. She understands how difficult it is to learn a new language & any success is rewarded with enthusiasm.
These ideas are backed up by research, please find attachments at the end.

UX Flow

Body storming
View a playful example of how the mentor and user would interact in the real world. This video highlights how contextual learning can be applied to real environments.
This type of interaction allows learners to process new information in relation to their own frames of reference.

Art direction
The art direction for the app would feel modern and exciting. The exploding and energetic ball would come to life when learners get phrases correct which would entice them to complete their targets, and share with friends their mentor experience, unlike any other.

Prototype
View the finished prototypes in these video’s to view a snipped of how the user and mentor would interact.
I ran into trouble right before hand in and I couldn’t load the prototype onto my phone. However hopefully these video’s give insight into the desired effect.
